Women's Tackle Football World Champs

USA World Champion's Women's Tackle Football

I have enjoyed being the Team Doc for the Modesto Maniax Football team. The pre-game locker room definitely has a different vibe compared to Men's football. ( I remember frantically searching my Medical Bag for an "emergency" ponytail holder... LOL).
Hopefully an International Title will help bring more attention to this exciting sport.
See u at the Sacramento Sirens Playoff Game 7/10/2010 in Sac.

Spring Sports

Well Stanford Women's NCAA Basketball was a nailbiter. But UConn rocked it AGAIN!!!
After 8 years at the Farm (AKA Stanford) ... I've got to keep hope alive.
On to baseball. All of my area teams are kickin' butt in tourney play. CCHS, Escalon.
But always a shout out to my buddy Miguel. Freshly traded to the Colorado Rockies!!!
I hope it's easier to fly to than K.C. Rockies Rock!

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Hope or Hype?

Have you had an injury to a tendon, ligament, meniscus, or cartilage? There is a promising new treatment that can speed up or improve the healing process.
PRP is a recently popularized injection that some say can improve healing of Orthopedic injuries.

What is it?
PRP is obtained from a sample of your own blood. It is placed in a centrifuge where it is spun for several minutes. At the end of the spin down process, the blood is separated into 3 layers. One of the layers has PRP. It is separated from the other layers and injected into damaged tissue.
The up side: your own blood injected into your own body. The down side: research is still being done to prove how effective it is...but people are making the calculated risk/benefit ratio and getting it done.

Next up. Details of the history behind PRP, lab research and current treatment options.

ACL Surgery 3 Months Post-Op

Well, I am slacking on the blog. Sorry. Kids, Graduations, Summer fun...
Stephen was 3 months post op in this video. He is right on schedule with his rehab. I don't know if he is going to try to play in that baseball tourney or not. He will be in the office soon. At that time we will look at his motion, stability and thigh muscle strength.
I hope these videos give you some idea the post-op rehab needed for a good outcome. I tell my patients that the outcome of this particular surgery is directly related to the time put in with post-op rehab. The surgery takes an hour, the rehab takes 6 months.

ACL Surgery Day 74

Well... Stephen is doing well. His ACL is stable. He has full motion. He is working out with John @ AIR Physical Therapy with an emphasis on return to sports.
AIR and I share an office building. It is easier to share info on how our patients are doing (translation: John runs over to my side of the office and says "Hey Lenita, Where's that camera?...Stephen's here!").
Stephen wants to play in a baseball tourney next month. A little too soon, but that's a tug of war we will have off camera. Many patients feel ready to go at 4 months. Good motion and a knee that's finally stable feels good!!! For all pivoting, cleated and contact sports 4 months is too soon because the quadriceps and hamstring muscles are not strong enough to protect the graft and knee.
Stephen plays in a band so hopefully my next video will have some of his music in the background.

ACL Surgery Day 41 and 43

Well we are making great progress with Stephen's ACL surgery rehabilitation. Video of him in P.T. shows you all of the strengthening exercises appropriate for this phase post-operatively. In the office 2 days later we go over the range of motion and stability testing.

ACL Surgery Day 19 @ Physical Therapy

This video captures Stephen 19 days after ACL reconstruction at AIR Physical Therapy. John is narrating and you actually see Travis working on Stephen's Knee.

I share the building with an awesome team of therapist. Since they are close by I get a lot of feedback about my patients. This proximity allows us to communicate better and improve patient outcomes.
Looking Good!!!!

ACL Surgery Day 12

Ok so I am a slacker. It has been more than a week since my last blog. I AM a busy girl.
Stephen's knee is doing great. Below is a video of him day 12 after his ACL reconstruction. We get a look at his knee movement. We can also see the 8 and 9 millimeter screws on his knee x-ray. A girl loves her power tools!

ACL Surgery Day 5

This is a video of Stephen 5 days after his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction using his own patella tendon graft. Information in the education part of my website gives more detail about this type of surgery.
Please follow us through his post-operative rehabilitation.
I chose not to over edit this video because the questions and concerns that Stephen and I discuss are common to many of my patients after surgery.
Tune in next week for further updates.

Save Your Knees

Wow. There was a lot of excitement with the bike race. Rumor has it that one of Lance's bikes got stolen in Sacramento. There was a big crash in Modesto. It was surprising to me how many people came out in the pouring rain to watch the bikes whiz by.

Just found an incredible link for you knee pain sufferers.
http://www.saveyourknees.org/ I like the site because it it comprehensive, detailed and accurate. There are some goodies on the site that make u come back to the site again and again.

Check in with me next week...
I am working on a video that should be on youtube soon. It tracks the progress and post-operative rehab of a baseball pitcher with an ACL injury. He is doing well so far. I hope that the video sheds some light on the immediate post-operative events that occur after ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) knee surgery.
